Funchal: Old Town Walking Tour

1.Old Town Walking Tour

★★★★★★★★★★4.7 · 3,233 reviews · 2 hours · from $19Our pick

A 2-hour Funchal Old Town walk with markets, a 19th-century sweet factory, wine, sugar stories, and student-support.

“This a great way to start your holiday, get your bearings & learn more about the city's history & culture. Good to know too that your money is going straight into the University's Student Welfare Fund. Our group was very small - just three solo women travellers and our guide, Evalina, who's currently on a gap year from the Czech Republic. She was very knowledgeable for someone who's only been in Funchal for a month, spoke impeccable English, and gave us a little time to wander around the market independently. The tour took us into two impressive churches, past the Bishop's house, up the little street with all the painted…”

“Amazing day out and lots of walking but worth it, great views and the waterfalls are out if Jurassic Park film. The whole walking tour was informative and well organised, lots of uphill and though mostly downhill expect some tricky areas and walking shoes a must. Perfect weather today with cool breeze and no rain, perfect for hiking. Highly recommend the walk and a great way to see the island and its hidden gems.”

“Well organised tour with lots of interesting stops included in the itinerary - so you can see a lot of Madeira in a single day. The guide, Gamma, was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of insights throughout including about nature and places we just passed by in between stops. Also after I left my reading glasses in the van, they called me ASAP before I even realised and Gamma drove back to hand them over in a location I was at. Overall, a great tour and excellent service!”

“Absolutely amazing experience, highlight of our trip. Sara our guide and Nunu (?!) the driver where most professional & courteous. Highly recommending Lido Tours. They were prompt on picking us up from a location clearly communicated in advance. Sara was very knowledgeable of the hike, giving up plenty of information about the mountains, plants, birds. You could tell she takes a lot of pride in her job and her home island. The hike is challenging but rewarding. Lots of steps, but plenty of breaks. It is a popular route so there are many other people usually, including other groups, so at times the route needs to be navigated with care…”

“Unfortunately, due to heavy rain we couldn't do this walk. But, our guide recommended that we do another one - Levada do Rei, São Jorge so we don't miss much. It was beautiful, even though we had rain there, as well, for half the trip. Afonso ( I think!), our guide was great with a very good sense of humor.”
